In politics, alliances and enmities can be fluid and are often shaped by ever-changing circumstances. What may seem like a steadfast friendship or animosity at one point can evolve due to shifts in political landscapes, ideologies, or personal interests. While some alliances can endure for extended periods, political dynamics can lead to unexpected changes.

It’s crucial for politicians to navigate relationships strategically, considering the dynamic nature of politics and the need to build coalitions or make pragmatic decisions based on evolving situations.

The way individuals react to defections within their party ranks can indeed be a significant test of the strength and resilience of a democracy. A healthy democratic system should allow for a diversity of opinions and the freedom of individuals to make choices based on their convictions. However, the reactions to defections can reveal several aspects of the democratic culture:

Tolerance for Diverse Views: A robust democracy should be able to accommodate differing perspectives, even within political parties. Tolerance for ideological diversity contributes to a more vibrant political landscape.

Transparency and Accountability: How parties and individuals handle defections reflects their commitment to transparency and accountability. Open communication about reasons for defection and its implications helps maintain trust in the democratic process.

Adherence to Democratic Values: Democracies thrive when individuals and parties adhere to democratic values, such as the right to dissent, freedom of association, and the fair competition of ideas. Suppressing these principles can weaken the democratic fabric.

Voter Empowerment: The reactions of voters to defections are crucial. In a healthy democracy, voters should be empowered with information to make informed decisions, even in the face of changing party dynamics.
Institutional Strength: A democracy’s institutions, including political parties, should demonstrate resilience in the face of challenges like defections. Strong institutions can navigate changes without compromising the democratic process.

Ultimately, the true test lies in whether a democracy can weather the complexities and challenges posed by defections while upholding the core principles that underpin the democratic system.

Indeed, democratic ideals emphasize the importance of respecting individual choices, including the decision to switch political allegiance. In a democratic system, citizens and politicians alike have the freedom to change their political affiliations based on evolving beliefs, values, or circumstances. This reflects the principles of freedom of association and the right to express diverse political opinions.

However, it’s equally important for politicians to be transparent about their decisions and to communicate openly with their constituents. Public trust is a fundamental aspect of a healthy democracy, and politicians who switch allegiances should strive to maintain transparency and accountability to ensure that the democratic process remains robust and responsive to the needs of the people.

I do not think that anyone who has not for a day have to wear the boots of Momodou Sabally have the moral yardstick to measure his level of integrity. A young man with a growing family who has been deprived of cementing his productivity in our governance space cannot be expected to live on handouts perpetually.

There are indeed no permanent friends or enemies in politics and how we react to political defections shows our ability to transcend and navigate the theoretical waters of democratic propaganda to real practical acceptance and embrace of true democratic ideals.

Aung San Suu Kyi once a prominent opposition figure in Myanmar, she later became involved in the government, serving as State Counsellor.

Ronald Reagan originally a Democrat, Reagan later became a Republican and went on to become the 40th President of the United States.

David Cameron the former British Prime Minister began his political career as a member of the Conservative Party but later joined the ruling coalition with the Liberal Democrats.

Charlie Crist was a Republican governor of Florida but later ran for the U.S. Senate as an independent and eventually became a Democrat.

Julius Malema originally a prominent member of the African National Congress (ANC) in South Africa, he later founded the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), becoming a significant opposition leader.

Michael Bloomberg was elected as the Mayor of New York City as a Republican but later switched to being an independent and eventually a Democrat.

Winston Churchill, who switched from the Conservative Party to the Liberal Party and later rejoined the Conservatives is acclaimed as one of the most successful and outstanding Prime Minister Great Britain ever saw and trust me he dammed the Conservative party when he identified as a Liberal and dammed the Liberals when he identified as a Conservative.Momodou Sabally will most likely do same; it cannot and should not, in politics ,be a test of his integrity.

Political shifts can be influenced by a variety of factors, including ideological changes, policy disagreements, or strategic considerations.

There are those of us that can remain an opposition till we go to our graves. God has given each one of us the ability to make choices and also different levels of tolerance and strength. Let us recognise diversity and understand that not everyone is a Femi Peters, Ngogoi Njie, Sukai Dahaba and definitely the immortal Solo Sandeng.

The United Democratic Party is not a party that was built on the strength of incumbency. This is a party that had its foundations cemented by the blood, tears and sweat of illustrious sons and daughters of The Gambia and whose obstinate desire to see a progressive and emancipated Gambia meant making the ultimate sacrifice.

The party has sought relevance and prominence albeit not without bruises and scars, ulcers and fatality. Some will coalesce for a moment yet others will align for a lifetime. The ability to recognise the distinct uniqueness of both shows our depth of understanding, commitment and focus of greater things ahead.

Sabally’s season with the United Democratic Party has come to an end. Release him with love and peace and wish him well on all endeavours. In the final analysis, the objective of our great party, the United Democratic Party, is to secure victory in 2026 and nothing therefore should be allowed to derail this goal if it is indeed God’s will.

Gibril Sillah stands out as one of the most technically gifted young footballers in Gambia. Impressive performances led his former coach Jane Joof, now with Fortune FC, to re-sign him for the Petroleum Boys, setting the stage for Giberi’s progression to the Senegalese Premier League with Teungueth FC.

Giberi made an impactful debut in the Senegalese top flight, delivering stellar performances and impressive statistics in his first season with refisque-based club. He continued his success, securing a league triumph in his second season. However, it was his outstanding display in the CAF Confederation Cup that attracted the attention of African giants Raja Casablanca.

Despite joining with high hopes, Giberi faced limited playing time in his first year with Raja. Overcoming challenges, he found success with a loan spell to another Moroccan Botola League side, Jeunesse Sportive Soualem. Vladimir Putin says he will run for president again in Russia’s elections in March 2024, in a move that could see him retain power until at least 2030.

Putin made the announcement Friday after a ceremony at the Kremlin, the official residence of the Russian president.

Putin will bid for his fifth presidential term at the elections, set to take place on March 17, 2024, as he aims to solidify his continuous hold on power as head of state or prime minister for more than two decades.

The upcoming elections will also mark the first time that residents of the occupied Ukrainian regions of Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson, annexed by Russia during the conflict, will participate in the presidential elections.

The international community previously condemned local elections in these regions, organized by Russian-backed officials, as a sham.

The Kremlin has not yet released an official statement on Putin’s candidacy.

Putin became acting prime minister of Russia in August 1999, before unexpectedly being handed the presidency by then-President Boris Yeltsin on New Year’s Eve of that year.

He served two four-year terms as president before stepping aside in 2008, as he was not constitutionally permitted to run for another presidential term. He endorsed Dmitry Medvedev, who replaced him as president, while Putin took the role of prime minister for a second time.

But he regained the presidency in 2012 and has not relinquished his grip on power since. After winning re-election in 2018, Putin then signed a law in 2021 which paved the way for him to run for two more six-year terms.

The changes to the law means that Putin, 71, could potentially extend his rule until 2036, by which time he will be in his mid-80s and his rule will be well into its third decade.

Putin is expected to face no more than token opposition in March. Under his authoritarian rule, opposition politicians have met similar fates: Exile, imprisonment or death in suspicious circumstances.

Russian opposition leader Alexey Navalny, who posed one of the most serious political challenges to Putin during his rule, was sentenced in August to 19 years in prison on extremism charges. Navalny and his supporters claim his arrest was politically motivated, intended to silence his criticism of Putin.

It has been exactly three weeks since Gambian politicians passed the Former Presidents’ Bill 2023, designed to improve the post-office lives of ex-presidents and their spouses. While some view it as an incentive for leaders to voluntarily step down, the law has stirred mixed reactions, especially among citizens questioning its impact on the average Gambian.

In the aftermath of a challenging parliamentary session, a brief survey involving 10 students from the University of The Gambia and The Gambia College was conducted to gauge public reactions. Results showed that 8 students believe the bill primarily favors the elite, intensifying concerns about its broader implications.

Critics argue that in a nation grappling with challenges such as limited access to clean water, inadequate electricity, and subpar education and healthcare services, allocating resources for extravagant post-term benefits seems absurd. Juldeh Jallow, a fruit vendor from the Serekunda market, expressed disappointment, stressing the need for the government to prioritize economic recovery over such bills.

Foday Ceesay, owner of a fashion shop at the Latrikunda market, condemned the bill as a misplacement of priorities. Ceesay asserted that politicians are neglecting pressing issues in favor of self-serving agendas, calling for a leadership that aligns with the goodwill and highest ideals of the Gambian people.

Even the Gambian diaspora has weighed in. Fatoumatta Njai, based in Finland, criticized the bill as unlikely to secure support in even developed nations, underscoring a perceived failure by the Gambian government to address the needs of its people.

Despite the gravity of this dilemma, questions persist regarding its absence from the government’s priority list, with the nation’s Presidency notably silent on the matter.

Personal narratives, such as Ebrima Ndure’s, shed light on the intricate facets of the crisis. Faye openly wonders if the nation’s leadership is fully aware of the gripping crisis, leaving many to question the authorities’ dedication to addressing this urgent issue.

A grieving mother, who lost her son during a perilous journey to Spain, speculates that the government’s silence may stem from a lack of viable solutions for the youth. This raises crucial concerns about the government’s ability to provide alternatives that could dissuade young Gambians from undertaking such hazardous journeys in search of a better life.

Ismaila Barrow, a 20-year-old contemplating such journey, boldly states, “The government can’t cage us here since they have no realistic plans for us; we have no choice but to leave this country.” This sentiment underscores the urgency for the government to formulate comprehensive strategies. These strategies should not only address the immediate challenges of illegal migration but also offer viable prospects for the youth within the country.

The surge in illegal migration has far-reaching implications for The Gambia. Beyond the evident dangers faced by those embarking on treacherous journeys, it signifies a potential brain drain, with the nation’s most ambitious youth seeking opportunities abroad. A Woman King Among Men: The Empowering Journey of Fatoumatta Jammeh, a Leading Female Auto-Mechanic.

In the traditionally male-dominated field of automotive services, Fatoumatta Jammeh stands as a beacon of inspiration and change. As the CEO of The Gambia Female Automotive Service Providers (FASP), she has not only broken gender barriers but has also become a trailblazer in empowering women in a sector where they are often underrepresented.

Fatoumatta’s journey began after completing her senior secondary school in 2009 when she joined Riders for Health as a trainee apprentice in the vehicle management and mechanical unit. Eight years of dedicated training on the workshop floor paved the way for her admission to the Gambia Technical Training Institute (GTTI) in 2015. Her pursuit of a diploma in auto-mechanics culminated in her graduation in 2019.

Following the completion of her diploma program, Fatoumatta took a bold step by initiating and successfully facilitating the establishment of the first female automotive garage under FASP. Since then, she has served as the CEO, setting a commendable track record in advocating, promoting, and actualizing the training of young women in the automotive industry.

In 2022, FASP organized a noteworthy free maintenance and servicing program for various government institutions, a program that not only showcased their skills but also garnered recognition from credible international and media outlets, including DWTV, BBC, GRTS, and QTV. Fatoumatta’s dedication and achievements led to her being awarded the JAMBARR of the year by QTV and named JAMBARR of the year 2022 by Gambia Talent.

Active participation in the formulation of the national employment policy for 2022/23 showcased FASP’s commitment to influencing positive change at a policy level. To date, FASP has successfully serviced and maintained over seventy-five vehicles from both the public and private sectors.

Fatoumatta’s vision extends beyond the success of FASP. She urges the government, private sector, gender and women empowerment agencies, and individuals to join hands in building the capacities of women in technical and vocational professions. With over 60% of the productive population being women, she emphasizes the need for collective efforts to empower and equip them with skills that will contribute to the nation’s sustainable development.

The goal is clear – to transform FASP’s workshop into a modern, state-of-the-art facility capable of delivering quality services and providing training for prospective female auto mechanics. Under the banner of ‘Special Security Operation on Road Encroachment,’ the task force faced criticism from Darboe, who asserted that they exceeded their designated authority. According to Darboe, Police Commissioner for Mobile Traffic, Lamin King Colley, initially notified him about plans to clear specific strategic roads.
