Public Backlash Continues Three Weeks After Controversial Former Presidents’ Bill.

It has been exactly three weeks since Gambian politicians passed the Former Presidents’ Bill 2023, designed to improve the post-office lives of ex-presidents and their spouses. While some view it as an incentive for leaders to voluntarily step down, the law has stirred mixed reactions, especially among citizens questioning its impact on the average Gambian.

In the aftermath of a challenging parliamentary session, a brief survey involving 10 students from the University of The Gambia and The Gambia College was conducted to gauge public reactions. Results showed that 8 students believe the bill primarily favors the elite, intensifying concerns about its broader implications.

Critics argue that in a nation grappling with challenges such as limited access to clean water, inadequate electricity, and subpar education and healthcare services, allocating resources for extravagant post-term benefits seems absurd. Juldeh Jallow, a fruit vendor from the Serekunda market, expressed disappointment, stressing the need for the government to prioritize economic recovery over such bills.

Foday Ceesay, owner of a fashion shop at the Latrikunda market, condemned the bill as a misplacement of priorities. Ceesay asserted that politicians are neglecting pressing issues in favor of self-serving agendas, calling for a leadership that aligns with the goodwill and highest ideals of the Gambian people.

Even the Gambian diaspora has weighed in. Fatoumatta Njai, based in Finland, criticized the bill as unlikely to secure support in even developed nations, underscoring a perceived failure by the Gambian government to address the needs of its people.

The Former Presidents’ Bill 2023, intended to shape ex-presidents’ post-office lives, has triggered a broader discussion on government priorities and the perceived disconnect between leadership and the concerns of the Gambian population.

In response to these concerns, the public is urging the government to address pressing issues, emphasizing the need for a strategic focus on national discussions that enhance the economy. A comprehensive agenda, covering migration, civil rights, healthcare, affordable housing, job creation, corruption, and effective budgeting for debt reduction, is considered crucial for steering the nation towards an enlightened future. Many believe that without prioritizing such policies, the country will continue to face economic struggles, and the stigma of illegal migration, known as ‘Back-way,’ among the country’s young people through perilous journeys across the Mediterranean Sea to Europe, will persist.
