In a recent interview at the bustling Brikama market, Chairman Yankuba Darboe expressed deep concerns regarding the government’s road clearing task force operation in Brikama, deeming it as a direct challenge to his administration.
Under the banner of ‘Special Security Operation on Road Encroachment,’ the task force faced criticism from Darboe, who asserted that they exceeded their designated authority. According to Darboe, Police Commissioner for Mobile Traffic, Lamin King Colley, initially notified him about plans to clear specific strategic roads. However, the operation expanded into the market area, prompting Darboe to question the rationale behind this extension.
Darboe underscored that the task force’s actions surpassed their stated purpose, resulting in the demolition of spaces not initially identified. Expressing dismay over the lack of communication with the council, he emphasized the necessity for coordinated plans to relocate affected shop owners rather than abrupt demolitions without alternatives.
The chairman highlighted potential impacts on livelihoods, expressing concern about the government’s actions affecting individuals struggling daily. “In the absence of industries, tourism zones, or factories in Brikama, this market is the only hope for the community of Brikama,” he said. Darboe raised questions about the justification for clearing shops within a market for vehicle access, especially considering no prior complaints about poor road access.
As tensions escalate between the Brikama Area Council and the government’s Road Clearing Task Force, the community awaits further developments and resolutions addressing the concerns raised by Chairman Yankuba Darboe.
