In a heart-pounding showdown, The Gambia Scorpions clashed with The Red Devils of Congo in the decisive finale of the AFCON 2023 qualifiers. The Scorpions needed just a draw to secure their ticket to the next AFCON in Côte d’Ivoire, aiming for their second consecutive qualification. On the other side, Congo entered the field with unwavering determination, knowing that only a victory would fly their jet to Côte d’Ivoire 2024.

Under the bold tactical guidance of coach Paul Putt, who once coached Scorpions, Congo surged ahead in the first half, scoring two goals that piled immense pressure on The Gambia. With the halftime score reading 2-0 in favor of Congo, The Gambia Scorpions faced an uphill battle, further complicated by their head-to-head deficit from a previous encounter.
However, Scorpions refused to surrender. A tactical reshuffle and fresh legs injected new life into their game. Yankuba Minteh, Newcastle United young sensation on loan at Feyenoord, broke the deadlock in the 78th minute with a tap-in following a Muhammed Badamosi flick header. This remarkable goal involved the combined efforts of two substitutes. Then, in the 89th minute, substitute Muhammed Badamosi delivered a flicked header to seal a stunning comeback, leveling the score at 2-2.
This result propelled The Gambia to 10 points, trailing Mali at 12 points, securing their place in the next AFCON. Congo’s valiant effort left them with 7 points. The stage is set for Scorpions of The Gambia to shine once again in Côte d’Ivoire come January. It was a match that showcased resilience, talent, and the relentless pursuit of victory.
Congratulations, Scorpions! 🦂🇬🇲
