𝐑𝐞𝐝 𝐂𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐬 𝐕𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐝 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐞 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐄𝐟𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐛𝐚𝐭 𝐂𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞

The North Bank Region (NBR) branch of the Red Cross Society, in collaboration with their Senegalese counterparts, initiated a mangrove planting exercise earlier today as part of a five-day inter-university camp in Essau.

The camp, which unites Red Cross volunteers from across The Gambia and Senegal, including representatives from St. Louis, Dakar, Diourbel and Casamance, focuses on climate change mitigation through Anticipatory Action and Locally-Led Adaptation. The mangrove planting initiative is a vital step toward addressing environmental challenges and restoring wetlands in the region.

Speaking at the event, Mr. Lamin Marena, branch manager of the NBR Red Cross, praised the volunteers for their dedication, describing the activity as ”a step toward revitalizing the declining health of ecosystems in rural wetlands.” He also extended gratitude to the Governor of NBR, the Chairman of Kerewan Area Council, and the regional forestry directorate for their support.

The exercise was graced by prominent climate activists, including Ousainou Gambia, who generously donated the mangrove nurseries used in the project.

This initiative demonstrates the power of cross-border collaboration and grassroots efforts in addressing pressing environmental issues, highlighting the critical role of youth-led organizations in combating climate change and preserving ecosystems.
