In a significant development following our previous report on the concerning case of Dawda Njie, a man grappling with mental health challenges, who had been detained without trial for a period exceeding two weeks, Dawda has been relocated from the Bundung Borehole Police Station to a more spacious facility at the Bundung Police Station. This development comes as concerns continue to grow over the extended duration of his detention, highlighting the pressing need for transparency in legal procedures and mental health support within the justice system.
Dawda Njie, originally a deportee from Germany, found himself in a situation at the Bundung Borehole Police Station that far exceeded the legally mandated 72-hour limit for individuals to be brought to trial. The uncertainty surrounding formal charges against him had raised significant questions about the treatment of vulnerable individuals within the law enforcement system.
The initial incident that led to his detention involved an alleged assault on Lamin Cham, a resident of Bundung. However, essential details pertaining to the altercation and the nature of the alleged threats remained unverified, leaving room for speculation and concern.
In our pursuit of a comprehensive understanding of these unfolding events, our reporter visited the Bundung Borehole Police Station, where Dawda was initially detained. The Station Officer was approached for comments, but he directed our reporter to contact the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Gambia Police Force. Following this guidance, the PRO was promptly informed about the situation, and he expressed his intent to communicate with the station for further details, committing to return our call. Regrettably, this call was not received.
Approximately three hours later, on that same Friday, a source closely associated with the case confirmed that the mentally challenged individual, who had been in custody for over two weeks, had indeed been transferred to a larger facility at the Bundung Police Station.
This development signifies a noteworthy step in the ongoing case, addressing concerns about the conditions of Dawda Njie’s detention. Nevertheless, it underscores the critical importance of expeditious resolution and transparency in legal proceedings, as well as the urgent necessity for appropriate mental health support within the justice system.
