The recent declaration by the director general of the Food Safety and Quality Authority Mamudu Bah, has ignited a fierce debate on food safety perceptions in the nation. The director’s assertion that expired food may not be inherently hazardous has stirred significant controversy.
In his statement, the director general shed light on a prevalent misconception in The Gambia, where many residents equate “expired” with dangerous food. He clarified that an expired label primarily signifies the manufacturer’s withdrawal of a quality guarantee, emphasizing that it doesn’t necessarily make the food unsafe or toxic.
Critics swiftly took to Twitter which is now X, branding the remarks as “contradictory and wrongheaded.” One critic questioned why the authority exists if consumers must assume their own risk, while another noted the distinction between “used-by” and “expiry” dates.
This perspective challenges conventional wisdom and calls for a more nuanced understanding of food labeling. Simultaneously, it raises important questions about the necessity of stricter food control systems and enhanced consumer education on safe food handling and storage.
The DG’s remarks underscore the need for informed decision-making when consuming food past its expiry date. While some applaud his effort to clarify the issue, others advocate for comprehensive food safety measures to safeguard public health.
